During WWDC 2021, Apple announced the expansion of the functionality of the mobile version of the application. Soon, Safari browser for iOS and iPadOS will get support for extensions like users of Mac computers.

Thanks to add-ons, you can significantly expand the functionality of your browser – add VPN support, install password managers, ad blockers and other utilities that make web surfing more comfortable.

Developers were able to create universal extensions that are available on three platforms at once: Mac, iPhone and iPad. Apple promised to present the corresponding toolkit for creating universal extensions later this year.

According to analysts, the release of cross-platform updates took place after the combined efforts of Apple, Google, Mozilla and Microsoft to create universal extensions in the browsers Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge.

So, in June last year, Apple already added support for the WebExtension API to the desktop version of its browser. It is expected that the new functionality of Safari will be available to owners of smartphones and tablets of the brand this fall.
