Microsoft shuts down Cortana mobile app for Android and iOS.The Cortana iOS and Android apps are no longer supported, Microsoft has also removed Cortana app from the App Store and Google Play store.
In December 2015, Microsoft released Cortana for iOS and Android for the first time. The app was originally intended to connect Windows 10 PCs and mobile phones. But despite all efforts and a significant overhaul, Cortana failed to gain momentum.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged the company’s difficulties in dealing with other digital assistants a few years ago. He also said that Cortana was no longer considered as a rival to Alexa and Google Assistant.
Microsoft once imagined a world filled with Cortana-enabled refrigerators, toasters, and thermostats. The dream never came true, instead, recently Microsoft’s digital assistant was removed from the first and only Cortana speaker. Other products, such as the GLAS thermostat, are no longer supported by Cortana.
Cortana is Microsoft’s AI-based personal assistant that can answer questions and perform simple tasks. The eponymous mobile app was first released in November 2018. However, it never gained a big user base or popularity like Google assistant, Siri or Alexa.
Many smartphone users even do not know about Cortana. That’s why Microsoft has no other option rather than to shut it down on mobile platforms.
“As we announced in July, we will soon be ending support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS, as Cortana continues its evolution as a productivity assistant, As of March 31, 2021, the Cortana content you created–such as reminders and lists–will no longer function in the Cortana mobile app, but can still be accessed through Cortana in Windows,” says Microsoft on its support page.
