iPhone 12 Pro will soon able to scan shoe size in 3D for online shopping, thanks to the LiDAR sensor. LiDAR allows you to scan objects in 3D, among other things. The Swedish company Volumental wants to use the camera of iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max to improve the online shopping experience.

Indeed, e-commerce has totally exploded since last year with the Covid-19 pandemic. Home deliveries for everyday items are relatively easy, but that’s a whole different story for clothes and shoes. Even if you know your usual shoe size, this does not guarantee that the pair you order will be the correct size. So Volumental has planned to use your iPhone 12 Pro to find the perfect shoe online.

For the context, the Swedish company has developed the Volumental Scanner which is a 3D foot scanner. At present, this scanner is already widely used by shoe stores such as Adidas, Allbirds, Bauer, Fleet Feet, Road Runner and The Athlete’s Foot. Salespeople scan customers’ feet with a specific device to take their detailed measurements. Indeed, it is not only the shoe size but also the width of the feet, for example.

Previous iPhone models will therefore not use the LiDAR scanner, but RATHER USE augmented reality to measure the shoe size of users.
